Know Wine Types
If you are getting started in buying wine, it is useful to know the varieties available. You should know that there are four types of wines: white, red, dessert and blush wines.

Which Wine When?

Blush wines are great for picnics – they are used with simple foods. Red wines are categorized as: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel, and pinot noir and are most usually consumed during dinner. White wines are things like chardonnay or Riesling and go very well with lighter meals that are earlier in the day. Desert wines – like sherries or port wine – are usually had after dinner with sweets.

Decisions: The 3 P’s

  • Price - when choosing a wine, you need to be aware of how much is costs. If there is a wine that costs $14 that is comparable to one that is $25, choosing the lower priced wine makes financial sense.
  • Preference – generally, people need to learn to enjoy stronger flavored wines. As such, if you are hosting a large gathering, consider buying a more subtle wine like merlot, chardonnay or pinot noir so everyone will enjoy it.
  • Pairing – you always want to match your wine with your food as you want the wine to compliment the meal not overpower it (or not have and flavor in comparison). Use red wine for red meats and wine wine for fish or chicken.

We hope this helps you choose a great wine. Remember to store your wines properly and get a great wine rack.
